WIFVNE is proud to co-sponsor this DocYard screening of Our School, a film by producer and director Mona Nicoara. Shot over four years in rural
Transylvania, Our School follows three Roma children who are among the pioneer participants in an initiative to integrate the ethnically segregated Romanian schools. This award‐winning work will screen February 6 at 8pm at the historic Brattle Theatre followed by an exclusive, in‐person Q&A with Nicoara.

The film’s poignant and intimate portrait of rural village life and its
rhythms not only introduces viewers to the stark reality of the children’s situation but also inspires a deep admiration for their indomitable spirit, punctuated by shocking instances of prejudice and ignorance. Their story touches on issues such as institutionalized racism, public education, and the intractability of poverty, culminating in an outrageous finale that cements the Roma children’s struggle in the annals of egregious human rights violations. Our School is an absorbing, infuriating, and ultimately bittersweet story of tradition and progress.

The DocYard’s 2012 Winter season screens at the Brattle Theatre every other Monday from January 23 to April 16. The series continues to offer an incredible array of nonfiction and documentary works, with stories about fights against bureaucracy, racism and personal demons. All screenings begin at 8pm, followed by a Q&A moderated by Boston‐based filmmaker Chico Colvard, and an after‐party at the Crimson Lounge in Harvard Square.

Individual tickets for each film are $10 and can be purchased online at www.brattletheatre.org or prior to show time at the Brattle Theatre box office. For more information on the DocYard and its 2012 Winter Season, visit www.thedocyard.com.

“Fureidis (‘Paradise’ in Arabic), a small fishing village next door to Tantura, near Haifa, is one of the few Arab villages Israel did not destroy in 1948. Paradise Lost chronicles Mara’aneh’s semi-autobiographical quest to reconstruct, over stiff social opposition from family and elders, the lost history of the village where she grew up, especially why it was spared. Her quest for understanding her own identity–as a Palestinian, as a woman, and as a resident of the Arab village of Paradise (lost) within the Jewish state, takes the filmmaker much farther afield than she plans.”

About

Women in Film & Video / New England (WIFV/NE) is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to supporting the accomplishments of women working in the film, video and new media industries. We provide an educational forum for media professionals and a valuable network for exchange of ideas and resources.

WIFV/NE works to promote proactive images of women to the public and to empower all women in film and video to achieve their professional potential.

Women in Film & Video /New England is a member of an umbrella group called Women in Film & Television International (WIFTI). WIFTI is a global network comprised of some 35 Women in Film chapters worldwide and more than 10,000 members dedicated to advancing professional development and achievement for women working in all areas of film, video, and other screen-based media. Members: Click here to access the WIFTI Directory.

History of the Chapter

In 1981, eleven women, all Boston-based media professionals, came together to form the New England chapter of Women in Film. The founders are: Mary Benjamin, Rebecca Eaton, Raquel Ortiz, Robin Landerman, Christine Dall, Christine Herbes, Alice Hoffman, Janet Krause, Edith Luray, Midge MacKenzie, Diane Miller, Harriet Reisen, Katherine Deutch Tatlock, and Susan Steinberg-Woll.

“For all the big-name organizations that put an indelible stamp on the area film scene…local film offerings wouldn’t be quite as rich without the less acknowledged venues and groups that also play a crucial part, [including] Women in Film & Video New England, for supporting aspiring and established female filmmakers alike.”
– The Boston Globe (December 2005)

MIT Program in Women’s and Gender Studies in collaboration with Women in Film and Video/New England present a CHICKS MAKE FLICKS film screening…

No Way Out But One
a film by Garland Waller
Thursday – October 27, 2011
Room: 6 – 120
7pm

In 1994 Holly Collins became an international fugitive when she grabbed her three children and went on the run. It all happened because a family court had ignored Holly’s charges, the children’s pleas, Holly’s broken nose, Zackary’s fractured skull, and other medical evidence of domestic violence and had given full custody of Zackary and Jennifer to Holly’s ex-husband. Holly came to believe she and the children had No Way Out But One.

No Way Out But One tells the story of one woman and her family that is emblematic of a larger heartbreaking national scandal. In Child and Family Court systems across the country, those who abuse their children are often awarded custody of them by the very courts charged with protecting them. It is estimated that 58,000 children a year are ordered into unsupervised contact with physically or sexually abusive parents following divorce in the United States.

Though No Way Out But One is the story of one remarkable woman and her extraordinary efforts to protect her children, in far too many ways, Holly’s story is like thousands of others. It is the story of a national scandal, and it exposes a system that is dysfunctional and dangerous and must be radically changed.

Q&A with director to follow

Free & open to the public

*Wheelchair accessibility available through the Infinite Corridor in Building 8 or through the ramp at Building 14.*

Cosponsored by The Technology and Culture Forum’s End Violence group and Violence Prevention and Response (VPR)
