Media Mentors

THE 2010 MEDIA MENTORS APPLICATION PROCESS IS NOW CLOSED.

The Media Mentors program pairs WIFV/NE members with seasoned professionals. Applications are accepted at the beginning of each year for both mentors and mentees, and matches are announced in April. Media Mentors fosters an active community of media professionals by facilitating connections between Women in Film & Video/New England
members. All members who have never been paired with a Media Mentor are welcome to apply.

Here's what one recent mentee had to say about her experience:

"Media Mentors helped me immensely. I was matched with the most wonderful filmmaker- Maryanne Galvin, and actually ended up doing some filming for her latest documentary. She has been so helpful and encouraging with my own work. Thank you so much!"

Who can become a Mentor?
Any member of Women in Film & Video/New England with experience in a relevant media field can apply to become a mentor. Many factors will be used to match mentors with mentees. Mentors will not be selected solely based on the number of years of experience they have in their field. We encourage all interested members to apply.

Who can become a Mentee?
Any member of WIFV/NE can apply to become a mentee. We encourage all interested members to apply, regardless of their level of work experience. All efforts will be made to match mentees with appropriate mentors. Anyone who is not a WIFV/NE member must become a WIFV/NE member before applying.

What does it cost?
There is a $25 fee to cover the costs of the program for all Mentee applicants. Mentors are not charged for their participation.

How do I become a Mentor/Mentee?
Choose the correct application (there is one for Mentors and another
one for Mentees), fill it outline, or mail it to: WIFV/NE, 119
Braintree Street, Suite 509, Allston, MA 02134; Attn: Media Mentors.
Applications are due by Saturday, January 2, 2010.

Can you apply to be both a Mentor and a Mentee?
Yes.

When do I find out if I will be a Mentor/Mentee?
Applications are due by Saturday, January 2, 2010. Matches will be
announced by Monday, March 1, 2010.

By applying, am I guaranteed to be a Mentor/Mentee?
No.

What kind of commitment am I asked to make as a Mentor?
Mentors must be willing to make a commitment to meet twice
face-to-face and have four phone conversations over a four-month
period with their Mentee. Media Mentors 2010 will run from April thru
July. WIFV/NE also requests each Mentor to fill out an evaluation
form.

How often can I meet with my Mentor?
The suggested structure is that Mentees and Mentors will meet twice
face-to-face and have four phone conversations over a four-month
period. Media Mentors 2010 will run from March thru June. Mentees are
required to attend a brief workshop on mentoring in March before meeting their
mentors. WIFV/NE also requests each Mentee to fill out an evaluation
form.

What does Media Mentors offer me as a Mentee?
Media Mentors is designed to provide Mentees with a chance to ask
questions, gain insights, assess their goals with the help of an
experienced professional, and learn valuable information about their
field. Due to the limited meeting schedule, Mentors are not expected
to teach specific skills. Media Mentors is not designed to provide
Mentors with an intern.

What if a problem arises with my Mentor/Mentee?
A WIFV/NE representative will be available to help assess any issues
and decide whether the relationship should continue. Written
guidelines will be available to clarify the boundaries and
expectations of the relationship.
