    Salem Film Fest (SFF) is a leading, award winning international documentary film festival in New England. The 17th edition of our fest will take place March 21-24, 2024 and is returning to an all in-person screening format, with filmmaker q&as as well as parties and other special events.

SFF will present an in-person screening of the selected shorts program, followed by a Q&A with attending filmmakers.  The Mass Reality Check documentary showcase will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 12:45pm at the National Parks Service Visitors Center.

    Join Haley Ricker of Clocktower Tax Credits 

    as she leads this WIFVNE Networking Wednesday session


    In this special "Ask Me Anything" Networking Wednesday event, Haley Ricker of Clocktower Tax Credits offers insight on film tax credits.  

    Haley will provide a general overview of film tax credits and discuss

    • What does a film tax credit broker do
    • How do film tax credits help finance a production

    Haley Ricker joined Clocktower Tax Credits in 2023 as an Acquisitions Associate specializing in Film-based tax credits. She started her career working in the legal field before transitioning into the entertainment industry after moving to Los Angeles. Her previous position at a feature film sales, finance, and production company gave her hands on experience in multiple facets of filmmaking. Haley now focuses on helping producers monetize their tax credits and reviewing their projects for financing opportunities.  Haley holds a B.A. in Sociology and Legal Studies from Clemson University. She currently resides in Los Angeles, with her husband, James, and their dog.


    Clocktower Tax Credits, LLC is a national broker of State and Federal tax credit incentives. We match Developers and Producers sponsoring tax credit projects with Institutional Investors seeking tax relief. Our firm specializes in tax credit financing for the film production, real estate, and renewable energy industries.

    The 2nd Annual Lois Weber Film Festival is an event that highlights Lois Weber's contributions to cinema by showcasing her films and the films of other rising female filmmakers in our region.

    Lois Weber was a pioneering filmmaker in the early 20th century, known for her groundbreaking contributions to the film industry. Less than 20 of her films have been preserved and many only exist in fragments, so do not miss this opportunity to see one of her most famous films, Shoes, on the big screen with live accompaniment by renowned composer Jeff Rapsis.  Learn more and get tickets here!

    The Rhode Island Black Film Festival gives a voice to diverse cultures. We welcome the Black, Afro-Caribbean and Latin both local and worldwide. With a varied lineup of narrative, documentary, feature and films. The Rhode Island Black Film Festival features emerging filmmakers, actors and film industry insiders sharing their passion for the artistry of cinema. Our mission is also to be a platform for increasing participation/presence of Black and other children of color minority youth in Rhode Island’s film production industry. We create opportunities for individuals at all stages of their life to enjoy the medium of film.

    The 2024 Rhode Island Black Film Festival: Black Culture in Film also seeks volunteers to assist in may areas of the festival, including box office, panels, events, production, tech, and management.  Contact RIBFF here.

    Wicked Queer: Boston’s LGBTQ+ Film Festival (formerly the Boston LGBT Film Festival) was founded in 1984 by film programmer George Mansour. Wicked Queer is the 4th longest running LGBTQ+ Film Festival in North America and is an all volunteer organization. Our mission is to build community and to celebrate Queer storytelling and filmmaking through the uplifting of voices and stories not yet heard and to present and preserve the vibrancy of our histories.

    Wicked Queer is a sponsored project of the Queer Film Institute.

    It takes a village to put these screenings together. WQ:40 seeks volunteers to fill many positions for our 2024 season. Email them about joining their volunteer team!

    Join WIFVNE for this intimate conversation and networking event designed to help demystify the winding journeys Assistant Directors (AD)s take from Production Assistant (PA) to AD.  Let's learn about the various pathways!  Sandra Forman provides an overview of the DGA Trainee Program and the application process; Emma Barber tells of her experience prior to, during, and post DGA Trainee Program; local 2nd A.D. Katie Valovcin and 2nd 2nd A.D. Maggie Crawford share their experiences on union films and TV shows.  We're delighted to have WIFVNE member Sabrina Avilés, founder of the CineFest Latino Boston Film Festival, moderate the conversation. 


    Our guests

    Sandra Forman began her career working in HR during the early years of the A&E cable network. For many years, Sandra has been the Administrator of the Directors Guild of America Assistant Director Training Program, guiding an annually selected group of Trainees through the rigors of film, television and commercial production. Sandra is also the Administrator of the DGA Commercial Qualifications List accrediting Assistant Directors and Unit Production Managers for DGA membership in conjunction with the AICP (Association of Independent Commercial Producers).



    Emma Barber, a Directors Guild of America (DGA) First Assistant Director (1st AD), has over two decades of experience across 50+ Film and Television Productions nationwide.  A Boston University alumna with a BS in Film & Television, she's also a graduate of the NYC DGA Trainee program. Actively involved with the DGA, most recently contributing on the Proposal’s Committee that led to the latest DGA Contract.  She volunteers for harm reduction initiatives, aiming to elevate mental health awareness and impact the industry's future.  Off set, she pursues personal growth through yoga and martial arts, currently pursuing her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training certificate and a Purple Belt in Karate.


    Maggie Crawford is a 2nd 2nd Assistant Director originally from Virginia.  After earning her days as a production assistant, she was accepted into the DGA in 2022. She has worked on television shows and films in New England for the past six years. Her credits include "I Care A Lot," "Kevin Can F*** Himself," Wonder Woman 1984, and "The Righteous Gemstones."




    Katie Valovcin was born in Boston and has been in the film industry for over 10 years. She attended Film School at Chapman University and shortly after college got her start as a Production Assistant on a feature film.  After working as a PA for several years she joined the DGA.  Since then Katie has worked throughout the country as an AD.  She has assistant directed big studios films such as Little Women, White Noise, John Wick 3, and most recently Madame Web.

    WIFVNE member Sabrina Avilés is an award-winning independent filmmaker, whose work has taken her throughout Latin America, Canada and Europe. During her 25+ year career, she has worked on many PBS programs, among them the six-hour Peabody award-winning series, Latino Americans. Currently, she is in production for her first feature-length documentary on the city of Chelsea, MA and its response to the pandemic.  In addition to her film production career, in 2016 Sabrina became the Executive Director of the Boston Latino International Film Festival. In 2022, Sabrina founded CineFest Latino Boston Film Festival.

    Join Jessica Maher, Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA New England,

    In this special "Ask Me Anything" Networking Wednesday event, WIFVE member Jessica Maher of SAG-AFTRA New England will answer your questions about SAG-AFTRA.  

    Jessica will provide a general overview of SAG-AFTRA and discuss such topics as 

    • How to become SAG-AFTRA eligible and then a union member
    • SAG-AFTRA union benefits
    • Working with SAG-AFTRA union members, for big budget projects and micro-budget projects (it's possible!)

    Jessica Maher is the Executive Director of SAG-AFTRA New England and has been with the union in various roles since 2008 after previously working for AFTRA/SAG Boston in the late 1990s. Her recent attention has been on contract enforcement, member education, and set safety while guiding the local through the 2023 TV/Theatrical Strike. Jessica currently serves as a board member of the Massachusetts Production Coalition and played an important role in the elimination of the sunset of the Massachusetts Film & Television Tax Incentive which passed in the summer of 2021. Prior to her return to the union, Jessica worked for the PBS science series NOVA. She is a graduate of Northeastern University’s Music Business program and lives in Quincy with her husband, Tom, and three sons.

    This conversation will be moderated by WIFVNE Board member Jaci Kjernander.  Jaci is an award-winning actor, producer, writer, and director. Her latest film, "Between Floors," is currently making its festival rounds and can next be seen at the Boston International Film Festival on Saturday, April 13th. A champion for inclusivity, Jaci's films are almost entirely crewed by WIFVNE members.

    The annual Made Here Film Festival is New England’s only competitive festival devoted entirely to films made by filmmakers of New England and their neighbor, Québec.

    It is a partnership with Vermont Public and co-sponsored by Maine Public Television. MHFF is free to the public but donations are encouraged because a portion of your donations will be shared with the filmmakers.

    Alecia is a prominent voice in the region's film community as President Emerita of WIFVNE. She also devotes time to Save MA Film Jobs / MA Film Works, working behind the scenes for the grassroots organization supporting Film Tax Incentives in Massachusetts.

     The Ridgefield Independent Film Festival is a highly curated annual independent film festival that seeks to make the world a more compassionate place through the sharing of stories through cinema.   RIFF No. 9 will take place May 16-19, 2024 throughout Ridgefield, CT.

    Every year, RIFF invites independent filmmakers from around the world to share their work and enjoy the picturesque town of Ridgefield, CT. This year, they are especially seeking films by women that engage with the theme "Our Bodies Ourselves."

    The 2024 Ridgefield Independent Film Festival also seeks volunteers. The festival tailors volunteer tasks around the volunteers' interests, abilities, and schedule.  Contact RIFF here.

    The 33rd Woods Hole Film Festival will be held from Saturday, July 27 – Saturday, August 3, 2024 as both an in-person and virtual event. The virtual screenings will be available on the Festival platform from Sunday, August 4 though Sunday, August 11th.

    The Woods Hole Film Festival is an eight day showcase of independent film featuring daily screenings, workshops, panel discussions, special events, master classes, parties, awards ceremony and more. Passes on sale June 1, 2024; Individual Tickets on sale July 1, 2024.

    Mystic Film Festival is an annual event showcasing independent feature-length and short-form narrative films and documentaries from around the world. The festival brings together a diverse group of filmmakers and audiences to explore ideas, discuss the filmmaking process, and celebrate creativity. Through engaging community events, industry panels, and film screenings by acclaimed and up-and-coming talent, they aim to make the festival a special experience for filmmakers and audiences alike.

    Now celebrating its seventh year, the festival will take place a little earlier from September 19 - 22, 2024 at venues in Mystic, Connecticut and neighboring shoreline towns. The cornerstone venue is Mystic Luxury Cinemas in Olde Mistick Village. Mystic Film Festival opens with a local premiere and close the festival with an awards event where the best film in each category is recognized. They are expanding their submission categories for 2024 including Animation films, Made in CT, Made in New England, Holiday,

    The un-produced script competition is now entering its fifth year and continues to be a big success as we continue to grow relationships with key partners in the screenwriting industry. Mystic Film Festival is excited to expand the categories for 2024 including adding Short Scripts, TV Pilot Scripts, and Stage Plays. The top winners of the screenplay competition will be announced at the festival in September 2024.
