ON THE COVER OF TIME: A MEMOIR WITH SONGS
TO DEBUT AT GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY JULY 25
A CONCERT READING of ON THE COVER OF TIME, a musical memoir now in development, will be featured at Gloucester Stage Company’s NeverDark series on Tuesday, July 25 at 7:30 PM. Singer Jeanie Stahl and actress Anne Gottlieb perform the piece by Harriet Reisen (book and lyrics) and Jeanie Stahl (music). Douglas Lockwood directs.
ON THE COVER OF TIME is the story of a woman and a generation, the baby boomers, through the seventy years since World War II.
Baby boomer Rosie wants to be a “somebody,” like her mother’s sister Rita, “not a nobody” like her housewife Mom. Aunt Rita is a glamorous executive at Doyle, Dane, Bernbach, the top “shop” during the Creative Revolution in advertising. The mystery of Rita’s early death becomes Rosie’s obsession. Only when she solves that mystery can Rosie finally come into her own.
Audiences surveyed call ON THE COVER OF TIME “moving and inspirational,” “sentimental where it should be, funny, sad, goofy, just like life,” and “about what it means to be a powerful free woman.” They acclaim the performers, commenting that “Jeanie Stahl is a wonderful singer!” and “Anne Gottlieb is fantastic!” The songs remind audience members of “Joni Mitchell,” “Pete Seeger,” and “Stephen Sondheim,” and the script brings to mind “Wendy Wasserstein’s plays.”
