It is with sadness that we write to inform you that WIFVNE has recently learned of the passing of Priscilla Forance, an early Board Member and President who contributed greatly to both the growth of this organization, and to the advancement of women’s voices in the media industry.
Former WIFVNE Vice President, Beth Harrington, a close friend of Priscilla’s, shared this touching remembrance with us:
“Priscilla was a bigger than life person, full of humor and vitality, an incredible networker. She was a huge supporter of women filmmakers and filmmakers of color. She worked in distribution for over well over 40 years – starting with her time at Bullfrog Films and culminating more recently in her role as a Marketing and Outreach Consultant to Annenberg Media.
She was the executive director of New England Women in Film’s first Dorothy Arzner Film Festival which focused on films by women from developing nations and women of color. She went on to become President of NE Women in Film and made it her mission to make WIF a more diverse organization. She helped organize one of the first meetings of all the American WIF chapters (at the time WIF was not connected internationally the way it is now) which took place in her living room in Marblehead, MA. This was the beginning of stronger connections among the chapters nationally and later internationally.
She was an activist and feminist. She did great cultural work to assist in the end of apartheid in South Africa and was a strong supporter of journalists and filmmakers in exile around the African continent.
She was a lover of music and art and boosted the reputations of numerous friends in that regard. She was funny and ultra-irreverent but also extremely kind and nurturing.”
