Behind the Scenes with Producers and Directors

hosted by Rule Boston Camera

part of WIFVNE's Mentoring Initiative

Join Women in Film and Video-New England for a panel discussion focusing on the vast world of production. These Producers and Directors form a talented group of women with a wide range of experience working on all aspects of production from creative planning and directing to production logistics and management they are behind the scenes, in the field, and on set with travel that takes them or their crews all over the country and around the world.

You’ll hear about the work they do from the creative elements of writing, developing, and directing content to all aspects of production including scheduling and hiring, budgeting, shooting, directing, and, at times editing through to post-production.

They manage companies, people, and projects for a variety of platforms including film, television, radio, digital and event content for advertising and brand campaigns, sports, commercial, corporate, and documentary content.

The panelists will share their personal experiences on education, mentoring, how they got their start in the industry, how their experiences shaped where they are today, challenging moments, and what they value most about the work they do.

Moderated by Women in Film & Video-New England President Alecia Orsini

Meet our Panelists

Joan Cassin, Freelance Director/Producer for Commercial Video Production + Television Production, has worked in virtually every aspect of film, TV and video from producing both on the production and agency side to directing animation and shooting beautiful lifestyle mini-documentaries. When she’s not shooting projects for clients (or really, just herself), she hikes, rock climbs, surfs and rounds out all that activity by reading lots and lots of comic books. Joan has done fun things for a mix of clients from big brands, startups, and indie producers to great networks like Discovery Science Channel, Animal Planet, History Channel, Cartoon Network, and many, many, more. With more than 15 years of experience working with amazing and talented creatives on broadcast campaigns, web content, and TV shows, Kristen Kearns, COO / Executive Producer at Element, thrives on making certain that every project is executed with the highest creativity and in the most efficient means possible. Kristen oversees everything from business affairs to client relations and also heads the post-production department. In addition to captaining the ship here, she’s been an agency producer and casting director. She’s worked with brands such as McDonald’s, SimpliSafe, Liberty Mutual, BMW and the Department of Defense.

Nikki McMorrow, Director / Creative Director at (add)ventures, is a director, creative director, and mother of two.  She writes, develops and crafts brand films and video content for story-minded marketers.  Originally from Illinois, Nikki began her career developing, producing, and editing series and specials for television networks including Bravo, A&E, MTV, Discovery, and National Geographic Channel.  She presently works with brands including CVS Health, Staples, DXL, and High Sierra. Nikki has a B.F.A. in Film & Television from Savannah College of Art and Design.  She is based outside Boston, MA.

Catharine Uyenoyama, Production Manager, Producer, Principal, DGA Productions, began at DGA Productions back when you had to remember pager numbers AND actually talk on a landline to book crew! Still, with the memory of an elephant (and the nose of a bloodhound), she can recount many production stories, in detail, from nearly 30 years ago when she started her career at Channel 5. In 1995 she rolled the dice and jumped with both feet, into a spot at DGA, a boutique production company, with founder, mentor and dear friend, Dean Gaskill. She never looked back. In an environment rife with a strong work ethic, camaraderie, humility, grittiness and gratitude, Dean encouraged her curiosity and taught her to be nimble. With sleeves rolled up, she learned to listen to clients, adapting to their needs surrounding crews and budgets - lean or large - in roles from PM to Producer and now Principal. Still that chameleon today, she's the backbone of DGA and not only acts as Den Mother to all but can crunch numbers alongside any Accountant. When her bubbly personality is not managing all that is DGA (her true forte is booking travel!), she moonlights as local Boston talent. Look for her in a variety of productions on the OTHER side of the lens!

Anya Adamsky is a Social Media Manager and Production Manager/Producer at DGA Productions After graduating from Brandeis University, Anya worked as a freelance Production Assistant in the local film community until she was scooped up by DGA nearly 7 years ago.  She has quickly worked her way up and now helms a variety of roles at DGA. When she is not knee deep in the DGA Instagram feed, she is working behind the scenes as Production Manager on a variety of projects -- from corporate productions to commercials.  She excels in the field as Line Producer. Her most recent projects include a collaboration with Mazda and ESPN.

Jackie Mow, Director / Producer, Rock Salt Creative, has produced news in France, chased ambulances for local TV news and reported for public radio. Passionate about science and education, she eventually landed a job at NOVA, PBS' flagship science series. She went on to produce and direct for National Geographic Explorer, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel and PBS Kids.  Jackie has also worked on several documentaries using personal narrative to bring untold stories of women and girls to viewers.  Her first independent film, East of Salinas, a film about growing up undocumented in America, aired on PBS as part of the Independent Lens series.
